November 1

Houghton 3, Frostburg State 1

 

Jana Ortiz (Sidney, N.Y.) finished her career in style, tallying all three goals, as the Highlanders captured the title of their Postseason Invitational with a 3-1 win over Frostburg State on Saturday.

 

With the win, Houghton finishes the season with a 16-2 record, establishing a new mark for wins in a season. Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) assisted on Ortiz’s third goal to tie Rochelle Hershey for most assists in a career with 30. It was Claybourn’s 17th assist of the season, also a program record.

 

Ortiz scored in the 8th, 42nd, and 45th minutes. The Bobcats got a goal from Ashley McKenney in the 47th minute to close the scoring.

 

Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.) had her second-straight complete-game win, stopping one shot.

 

Houghton had a 10-2 advantage in shots and an 18-6 edge in penalty corners.

 

Philadelphia Biblical University knocked off Washington & Jefferson, 9-0, in the consolation game.

October 31

Houghton 5, Philadelphia Biblical University 1

 

Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) broke the single season record for goals, Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) broke the single season record for assists, and the Highlanders (15-2) tied a program mark for wins in a season with a 5-1 victory over Philadelphia Biblical University in the first round of the Houghton Postseason Invitational.

 

Mazzeo opened the scoring in the 19th minute off an assist from Jana Ortiz, but PBU tied the score ten minutes later when Kirsten Aungst converted a penalty stroke past Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.).

 

The second half was all Houghton as Kristin Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) tallied in the 45th minute, Kelly Mazzeo registered her second from Ortiz in the 54th, and Ortiz scored her eighth of the year from Claybourn in the 61st minute. It was Claybourn’s 16th assist of the season, a new program record. Kristen Embich had 15 in 1999.

 

Kelly Mazzeo scored her third goal of the game and 22nd of the season with a diving backhand shot in the 69th minute to close the scoring and break the single-season goals record. The previous record for goals in a season was 21 by Karen Reichenbach in 1994.

 

Frederick, starting for the first time in her career, played well in net. She stopped 10 shots, including eight in the first half. Erin Lutz had 17 stops for the Crimson Eagles (12-5).

 

Houghton takes on Frostburg State in the championship Saturday at 1 p.m. Frostburg defeated Washington & Jefferson, 4-1, in Friday's other game.

 

October 28

Houghton 3, Rochester 0

 

Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) scored twice and Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) added two assists to lead the Highlanders to their 14th win of the season, a 3-0 decision over Rochester (8-10).

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made several key stops to preserve her sixth shutout of the season.

 

Mazzeo scored in the 18th minute off an assist from Claybourn, then assisted on sister Kristin Mazzeo’s goal in the 34th minute. She tallied her team-leading 19th goal in the 60th minute off another Claybourn assist. With two assists on the afternoon, Claybourn tied Kristen Embich’s program record for assists in a season with 15.

 

Houghton (14-2) outshot Rochester, 13-6, and had a 15-5 advantage in penalty corners.

 

October 21

Houghton 2, Elmira 0

 

The Mazzeo sisters accounted for both Highlander goals in a 2-0 win over Elmira on Tuesday.

 

It was the team's eighth shutout of the year.

 

Kristin Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) opened the scoring in the 14th minute off an assist from Isabel To (Bethesda, Md.), then assisted on sister Kelly’s team-leading 17th goal of the year in the 42nd minute.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) stopped all three shots she faced to record her fifth shutout of the season for the Highlanders (13-2). Kindra Catalano and Megan Mooney combined to make 12 saves for the Eagles (6-8).

 

Houghton outshot Elmira, 17-3, and had a dominant 15-6 advantage in penalty corners.

 

October 18

Oneonta 4, Houghton 3 (2OT)

 

Playing three times in three days took its toll on the Highlanders, who lost at Oneonta, 4-3, in double overtime.

 

Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) put the game into overtime with her team-leading 16th goal of the year with less than three minutes to go. But Oneonta’s Jenn Miller got the gamewinner two minutes into the second overtime.

 

Houghton’s Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) put the Highlanders up with her ninth goal in the eighth minute before Oneonta tied it four minutes into the second half. Stacy Garber (Lebanon, Pa.) scored just a minute later for Houghton, but Oneonta scored twice more to take a 3-2 lead.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made one save in the loss. Houghton (12-2) outshot Oneonta, 18-13, and had a 13-12 edge in penalty corners. Kelly Mohr had 10 saves for the hosts (10-5).

 

October 17

Houghton 5, Union 0

 

The Highlanders (12-1) registered their third-straight shutout and seventh of the season, knocking off Union (2-10) on the road.

 

Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) had two goals and two assists and Kristin Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) scored twice to lead Houghton. Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) also scored. Heather Hunter (Richmond, Ont., Canada) had two assists, while Sue Kelly (Sangerville, Maine) and Laura Hanks (Lancaster, Pa.) each had one.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made four saves in 62 minutes. Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.) faced no shots in eight minutes of action.

 

Houghton had a 10-5 edge in shots and 14-9 advantage in penalty corners.

 

October 16

Houghton 3, Castleton State 0

 

Houghton (11-1-0) scored twice in the last two minutes of the first half to put away Castleton (Vt.) State (4-7-0) on the road, 3-0.

 

Stacy Garber (Lebanon, Pa.) opened the scoring in the 34th minute off an assist from Heather Hunter (Richmond, Ont., Canada) and Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) scored her team-leading 14th goal of the year off a feed from Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) just 30 seconds later.

 

Kristin Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) closed the scoring at the 45-minute mark.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.) split time in net. Kline made one save in 45 minutes of play and Frederick made two saves in 25 minutes.

 

Houghton outshot Castleton, 19-3, and had an 18-1 edge in penalty corners.

 

October 11

Houghton 1, Ithaca 0

 

Jana Ortiz (Sidney, N.Y.) scored the only goal the Highlanders would need as they rebounded from their only loss of the season with a 1-0 victory at Ithaca on Saturday.

 

Ortiz scored her seventh goal of the year in 15th minute off an assist from Kristin Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.).

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made six saves to pick up her fourth shutout of the year, as the Highlanders (10-1) outshot the Bombers, 23-13, and held a 13-6 edge in penalty corners.

 

Nicole Blum had 10 saves for the Bombers (4-6).

 

October 8

Cortland 4, Houghton 2

 

Houghton ran into a formidable foe in Cortland State on Wednesday and suffered their first loss of the season, 4-2.

 

Cortland (10-0), ranked No. 5 in the latest NCAA Division III poll, scored three times in the first half and added another goal midway through the second half to take a 4-0 lead.

 

The Highlanders (9-1) were able to cut into the margin with two tallies in the last three minutes. Ellen Davies (Millville, N.J.) scored off an assist from Stacy Garber (Lebanon, Pa.) with 3:11 left and Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) registered her team-leading 13th goal of the season with an eight-yard backhand shot just one minute later.

 

Cortland outshot the Highlanders, 30-12, and held a 19-7 advantage in penalty corners. Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made 13 stops in net.

 

October 4

Houghton 2, Juniata 1 (OT)

 

The Highlanders found themselves in unfamiliar territory late in the game against visiting Juniata, trailing 1-0 with the clock slowly ticking away. But the team treated the Homecoming crowd to an exciting ending thanks to two players who have been instrumental in the keeping the Highlanders undefeated.

 

Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) scored her sixth goal of the year with nine minutes left in regulation and Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) netted the gamewinner six minutes into the first overtime to improve the team’s record to 9-0.

 

Mazzeo’s goal was her team-leading 12th of the season. Claybourn picked up the assist to give her a team-high nine on the year.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made five saves in goal.

 

September 30

Houghton 1, Geneseo 0 (2OT)

 

Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) scored the game-winner in the 88th minute to give the Highlanders a 1-0 double overtime win at Geneseo on Tuesday.

 

It was Mazzeo’s team-leading 11th goal of the season. Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) picked up the assist.

 

Houghton (8-0) had an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 16-12 edge in penalty corners.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made eight saves for her third shutout of the season.

 

September 27

Houghton 6, Seton Hill 2

 

Jana Ortiz (Sidney, N.Y.) and Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) each scored twice in a 6-2 win over Seton Hill (2-3) to keep the Highlanders (7-0) undefeated.

 

Mazzeo scored an unassisted goal to open the scoring in the 11th minute and Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) scored in the 28th minute to give the guests a 2-0 lead at the break. Houghton scored all four of their second-half goals in a six-minute span to put the game away. Ortiz scored in the 46th minute, Mazzeo in the 48th, Kerri Koch (Lititz, Pa.) netted her first of the year in the 50th minute, and Ortiz scored in the 52nd minute. The Griffins added two late goals.

 

Claybourn added two assists in the contest.

 

Houghton outshot the Griffins, 22-3.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made one save in 50 minutes of action, while Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.) allowed two goals and made no saves in 20 minutes.

 

September 26

Houghton 7, Washington & Jefferson 0

 

Senior forward Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) scored three goals as Houghton blanked Washington & Jefferson, 7-0, in field hockey action on Friday afternoon.

 

The Highlanders (6-0) took a 1-0 lead just under three minutes into the contest as Claybourn scored her first goal off a feed from sophomore forward Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.). Houghton increased its lead to 2-0 when senior forward Jana Ortiz (Sidney, N.Y.) scored on a penalty shot.   

 

HC then took a commanding 4-0 lead as Ortiz and Claybourn netted goals early in the second half.  Sophomore forward Ellen Davies (Millville, N.J.) and Mazzeo also added late insurance scores for the Highlanders, who held a 32-1 advantage in shots. Mazzeo notched two assists to go with her one goal. 

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.) each played a half in goal and neither faced any shots on goal. Heather Browne made 24 saves in 70 minutes for the Presidents (0-8). 

 

September 23

Houghton 5, Oswego 1

 

Sophomore Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) tallied three goals and an assist to move Houghton to 5-0 on the season and give head coach Donna Hornibrook her 100th win at Houghton.

 

Mazzeo put the Highlanders ahead in the fifth minute, before Oswego’s Melissa Christensen tied the score seven minutes later. But Heather Hunter (Richmond, Ont., Canada) ripped a shot from 12 yards out on the left side to put Houghton ahead for good. Mazzeo sandwiched her sixth and seventh goals of the year around the first career goal for Ellen Davies (Millville, N.J.) in the second half.

 

Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) played 50 minutes and allowed one goal. Erin Frederick (Wilmington, Del.) saw the first action of her college career, getting two saves in 20 minutes of action.

 

The Highlanders outshot the Lakers, 36-3, and had a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners.

 

September 18

Houghton 4, Mercyhurst 2

 

The Highlanders (4-0) kept their record perfect with a 4-2 win over visiting Mercyhurst (2-3) on Thursday.

 

Freshman Stacy Garber (Lebanon, Pa.) scored her first career goal in the fourth minute, but Mercyhurst responded with back-to-back tallies by Nicole Davis to go up 2-1 in the 30th minute. That lead was shortlived for the Lakers, however, as senior Jana Ortiz (Sidney, N.Y.) evened the score with her first goal of the season two minutes later.

 

Ortiz would add her second goal three minutes into the second half to give Houghton the lead for good. Sophomore Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 42nd minute to give the Highlanders a two goal edge.

 

Senior Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) had two assists on the night. Senior Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made 13 saves. Mercyhurst’s Julie Smith made six saves.

 

Houghton was outshot 15-10, but had a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.

 

September 13

Houghton 1, William Smith 0 (OT)

 

Junior Laura Hanks (Lancaster, Pa.) ripped a 15-yard shot just inside the left post to give the Highlanders a thrilling 1-0 overtime win over visiting William Smith College on Saturday.

 

Houghton (3-0) controlled most of the play in the first half and was denied several times by the stellar play of Heron keeper Jessica Kulesa. William Smith was able to turn the momentum in the second half, but were unable to break through the stingy Highlander defense.

 

Hanks’ gamewinner came with just over five minutes gone in overtime.

 

Senior keeper Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) made nine saves to get the shutout. Kulesa had 10 saves for the Herons (1-2). Houghton had an 11-9 edge in shots and 11-10 advantage in corners.

 

William Smith is ranked No. 18 in NCAA-III.

 

September 10

Houghton 2, Nazareth 0

 

It was a “sister-act” Wednesday night at Burke Field as sophomore Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) and freshman Kristin Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) tallied late second-half goals to give the Highlanders a 2-0 win over Nazareth.

 

Houghton (2-0) dominated play in the first half, earning numerous penalty corners, but the hosts couldn’t get any shots past the Nazareth defense and keeper Heather Sautter.

 

Nazareth (0-2) was able to increase the pressure early in the second half, however Houghton senior keeper Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.) kept them off the board with three key saves.

 

The momentum switched back to the home team and Kelly Mazzeo took advantage, ripping a 10-yard shot into the back of the net after a broken penalty corner in the 54th minute. Nine minutes later, Kelly found her sister Kristin, who tallied her first career goal.

 

Houghton outshot the Golden Flyers, 28-3, and had a dominant advantage in penalty corners, 20-6.

 

September 2

Houghton 3, Brockport 1

 

Sophomore Kelly Mazzeo (Braddock, N.J.) scored twice to lead Houghton to a 3-1 season-opening win over Brockport State at Burke Field.

 

The Highlanders (1-0) took a 2-0 lead into halftime following goals by Mazzeo and senior Brieanna Claybourn (Paulsboro, N.J.) in the 7th and 11th minutes, but the Golden Eagles (0-1) stepped up their play and finally found the back of the net when Kate Bennett scored in the 48th minute.

 

After a timeout and a formation adjustment, the Highlanders regained control and created several scoring chances down the stretch, with Mazzeo finally breaking through with her second tally with just over five minutes to go.

 

Senior goalkeeper Laura Kline (Harrisburg, Pa.), who made several key stops, finished with 15 saves on the night. Brockport’s Sarah Sutherland recorded 12 saves in the loss.
