Coach Webb]
Matt
Webb was named head coach of the Houghton College
men’s soccer program in 2004 after serving 11 years as
an assistant for both the men's and women's programs.
In his first season, he guided the Highlanders to a
record of 6-8-4, and followed that up with a 7-11 finish
in 2005.
In 2006 he made his first
appearance in the playoff leading the Highlanders to the
NAIA Region IX Final Four, finishing the season with a
record of 6-10-3.
Webb, who came to Houghton as a member of the residence
life staff in 1992, had served as director of student
programs since 1994. A former collegiate soccer player
at Bethel College
(Minn.), Webb began working with the women’s soccer
program in 1993, before taking over as first assistant
for the men’s program in 1997.
Through his work in the college student life office,
Webb was highly involved in the training and
mentoring of hundreds of student leaders and graduate
assistants. He has also been an active member of the
Association of Christians in Student Development and the
American College Personnel Association.
“For the past few years I have become more and more
aware that my passion is to work with our student
athletes,” said Webb. “This part of my job as assistant
coach has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my
work at Houghton. I now have the opportunity to be
involved in the bigger picture of creating a vision for
our program and having the responsibility and challenge
of leading our players.
“I bring a sincere desire to see young men grow and
mature not only as athletes but also as young Christian
men. I will bring new energy to this program with a
strong desire to continue to build upon our past
success.
“I have a good understanding of the history and
tradition of our program and I am looking forward to
interacting with our alumni and getting to know better
the extended Highlander soccer family. I am looking
forward to building a nationally competitive team and
getting back to the national tournament. I am very excited about
the future of Houghton soccer.”
In addition to his coaching duties, Webb has
administrative and teaching responsibilities in the
athletic department.
Webb holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from
Bethel College, a master’s degree in higher education
from Alfred University, and is completing his doctorate
in organizational leadership at Regent University.
A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America, Webb holds Advanced National Coaching and
Goalkeeping Licenses from the NSCAA. As a Houghton
assistant, Webb was charged with fall and spring
training, student-athlete recruitment, and assisting
with the college’s summer soccer camps.
In Webb’s seven years as assistant with the men’s
program, Houghton had an 87-33-9 record.
He is just the fourth head coach in the program’s 37 years.

Schilke
Assistant
Coach
3rd Season
Coach Schilke is entering his third
year as the men’s assistant coach. Prior to his role as the
assistant he served as a volunteer in the soccer program for 10
years. Schilke is an alumna of the Houghton College soccer program
(playing in the late 80’s and early 90’s) serving as the captain of
the squad in his final season in the fall of ’92.
Coach Schilke has an excellent mind for the game and is an excellent
trainer. His assessment of talent is a tremendous asset when
recruiting players to the program.
