New York State Driver's License
If you have a valid driver's license issued in another country, you are allowed to drive in New York State on that license. If you plan to drive outside New York, you should check with that state's regulations to see if your foreign license will be recognized there. Generally, if your foreign license is not in English you will at least need an International Driving Permit. For more information visit the NYS DMV webpage on Drivers From Other Nations.
How to Get Your NY License
- Study the
New
York State driver's manual. While it may not be fun to
study for an extra test,
everyone must pass the written test in order to get a permit.
- Apply for a New York State Learner's Permit. The
Intercultural Student Programs Office takes students once a
semester to get their learner's permit - usually in Oct and
Feb. (If on your own, go to the Department of Motor
Vehicles office in Belmont which is open M-F from 9-5;
directions can be found
here.) All
students must take the following documents with them when
getting their learner's permit:
- Form MV-44 (can also be obtained at the DMV)
- Social Security Card
- Proof of Identity - US citizens may bring their passport. International students must bring their passport, I-20, I-94, and one of the following; a bank card, credit card, or bank statement.
- Payment (between $60 - $90)
- All students must also pass a written test and a vision test at the DMV.
- Take a "5-Hour Pre-Licensing Driving Course." This
course is offered 3 - 4 times each semester at a nearby
vocational school. Intercultural
Student Programs coordinates one trip each semester to take the
course - usually in November and March. Students
interested in registering for the course on their own should
follow
this
link for more information. There is a $25 fee for the
class.
- Practice Driving
- Take the Road Test. Sign up for the road test online at this website. All students must have their pre-licensing course certificate before signing up for a road test appointment. Students should take their identification, learner's permit, and pre-licensing course certificate with them when arriving for the road test. There is no additional fee for the road test.
