Meet the Director
Director- Coach Rachael Snelgrove
When Houghton began its transition into the NCAA Division III and the Empire 8 Conference in 2012, Rachael Snelgrove began filling the dual role of head women’s lacrosse coach and head women’s field hockey coach.
Snelgrove came to the Highlanders as field hockey coach in 2008 before taking a year hiatus during which she taught biology in North Carolina and “discovered what it meant to be a Christian mentor and leader”. She returned to the field hockey program in 2011 and took the lacrosse reins for the program’s inaugural 2012 campaign. She stepped down from the lacrosse program following the 2014 season.
“My plans for the team all stem from giving God all the glory and honor in everything we say and do on and off the field,” said Snelgrove. “My goal is to create a culture of emulating Christ-like character; including being servant leaders off the field, on campus and in the local community; and through determination, focus and sportsmanship on the field. I want the team to strive for success in doing our best each and every day, constantly improving, and never settling for anything less than leaving everything on the field (whether that is in practice or games). I am looking forward to continuing to build on previous successes, and looking to make continued progress in individual skills and structuring and molding unity in the team.”
Snelgrove was a standout field hockey player at Messiah College, where she served as team co-captain and helped her team to three NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances. She was named to the NCAA DIII Final Four All-Tournament Team and finished No.3 in DIII for defensive saves her senior year.
Snelgrove has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Messiah and earned a master’s of education from the University of Pittsburgh.
