Eco Reps

The Houghton University Eco Rep program provides students with opportunities for leadership and action on sustainability.

With the newly revised Eco Reps program, students volunteer as Eco Rep Ambassadors to an affinity group such as their residence hall, sports team, or club. Students can also serve off-campus organizations such as their local church.  Eco Reps put sustainability into action by helping these groups incorporate creation care into their activities.

The Eco Reps program focuses on four “E’s” of student engagement.

  • Engage students who care about sustainability by investing in their leadership at Houghton
  • Educate students about environmental issues, creation care, and sustainability
  • Encourage students from a hopeful, Christ-centered perspective of sustainability
  • Empower students by providing them with the tools to make changes in their own lives, their campus, and their world

Eco Rep Benefits

The Eco Rep program provides students with the opportunity to make a positive and lasting sustainability impact on the Houghton campus. Eco Reps benefit from training and mentoring on a variety of creation care issues, including energy, composting, waste, biodiversity, advocacy, and more. The Center for Sustainability also provides funding for Eco Rep initiatives and helps partner with the Eco Rep Ambassadors to plan and host activities.

Some examples of Eco Rep activities or initiatives could include:

  • Planning an educational event for your dorm
  • Helping your sports team switch to reusable water bottles
  • Hosting a creation care Bible study
  • “Greening” an existing event for your club by using sustainable materials, food, etc.
  • Planning a volunteer day for your sports team to help in the campus garden
  • Hosting a trash pick-up party for your church youth group that you volunteer with

Eco Reps are expected to organize 1-2 activities per semester for their affinity group and should plan to attend bi-weekly meetings as often as possible.
