Two Data Science Students Present Research at Conference

May 10, 2022

Houghton University alumna, Gabriella Mancini ’21, and current data science student, Liam Fisher ’23, presented their research at the virtual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) on April 5th.  Their research, titled “Exploratory Data-Driven Approach to Identify Small Molecules for the Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease,” began last year with their project in the Shannon Summer Research Institute. Mancini and Fisher presented their results on the use of a data driven approach to identify small molecules for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

This conference gives students the opportunity to present their research, build their resumes, and network with and learn from other students and industry leaders.

This study adds to the latest research in this area and gives our students a chance to help solve pressing problems such as the Alzheimer’s epidemic. Our students will benefit from the experience of presenting their work and interacting with academics and professionals from across the nation.  Experiences like this go a long way to prepare students for rewarding careers in data science and related fields. -Carmen McKell, Associate Professor of Data Science
