What does transformational leadership look like?

A transformational leader influences others to think beyond themselves. They help them see the bigger picture of the organization, pushing them to think beyond their personal performance. A transformational leader helps them see the vision for the organization and stands firm on the following Christ-centered principles:

Creativity

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.

John 1:1-3

Jesus caused all things to come into existence, begin to be, and receive being (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon). As those made in the image of God, we were created to be creative.

Order

He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6:8

Order (justice) means doing the right things in the right way.

Righteousness

Seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well

Matt. 6:33

One who is righteous will love God and neighbor. This entails integrity, virtue, purity of life, uprightness, and correctness in thinking, feeling, and acting (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon).

Excellence

Whatever task you must do, work as if your soul depends on it, as for the Lord and not for humans, since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ.

Col. 3:23-24

“Soul” here refers to “the seat of the feelings, desires, affections” – it is not used in the salvific sense (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon). (Other translations use “heartily” or “with all your heart.”) Someone working with this mindset is going to continually strive to improve at the tasks they do and learn how to do those tasks with excellence.

Ontario native Sandra (Hodgins ’07) Hussin ’21 fondly remembers having a creative mind and a love for design from a very early age. Throughout high school and during her undergraduate time at Houghton, she cultivated that passion for design with a double–major in Art and Business. After a traumatic life event caused her to realize a new view of work, Sandra left the position she had been in for almost a decade and launched her own design business, Sandra Hussin Interiors. Houghton’s online MBA program inspired her as she built a foundational business plan that remains successful in her business launch.
