Houghton Students Receive Honors at NATS Competition

March 9, 2022

Linette Taylor ’23 and Evelyn Simanowski ’25 received honors for their National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) auditions in January. Taylor won first place for Musical Theatre – Upper College/Independent Studio Treble, and Simanowski was a semifinalist for Classical – Lower College/Independent Studio Treble. Houghton competes in the Central New York/Finger Lakes Region, which includes several renowned music programs such as Eastman, Ithaca, and SUNY Fredonia. Only the top five singers from each region category are recognized and advance to the national online preliminary round.

This year, the CNY-FL Region held virtual auditions, requiring video submissions. Student submissions were evaluated by voice teachers from all over the region.

“The competition in the CNY-FL Region is always tough, up against notable programs such as Ithaca, Eastman, and SUNY Fredonia, but our students’ preparation, perseverance, and determination in spite of the circumstances proved their place among these top contenders. Linette and Evelyn represented Houghton beautifully with their video auditions.”
