Russian String Orchestra to Perform at Houghton

March 6, 2018

Houghton University will welcome the Russian String Orchestra to the Wesley Chapel stage on Monday, March 12. The 7:30 p.m. performance is part of the 2017-2018 Artist Series.

Formerly known as the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, the orchestra is directed by founder Misha Rachlevksy, who has studied the violin since the age of five. He also founded the New American Chamber Orchestra in 1984 after relocating to the United States from Russia.

In 1991 Rachlevsky founded the Russian String Orchestra, which has performed in 24 countries across North America, South America, Europe, and the Far East. Nearly half of the orchestra’s 2,000 performances have taken place in Moscow, Russia.

Renowned for the depth and variety included in its repertoire, the orchestra performs both early baroque pieces and compositions written on commission from Rachlevsky and other composers from Russia, Europe, and the United States. Programs with what the Russian String Orchestra’s website calls “standard repertoire” include works by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Dvorak, and Mozart.

Tickets are $7 for youth and $16 for adults and can be purchased at https://www.houghton.edu/undergraduate/houghton-ny/majors-programs/academics/music/.
