Houghton University to Offer Criminal Justice Degree

August 29, 2018

Houghton University is pleased to announce the addition of a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice, available fully online or on campus.

Designed to provide students with a broad understanding of factors contributing to criminal behavior and efforts at control, the criminal justice degree prepares students to apply their liberal arts education to issues and problems that challenge neighborhoods and cultures. The major combines ethical and moral reasoning with analysis and evaluation regarding prevention, correction, restorative justice, and current policies.

An important distinctive of Houghton’s criminal justice program lies in its comprehensive approach, including major-specific courses in communication, ethics, political science, psychology, and sociology that examine ethical, psychological, and social aspects of criminal behavior.

Such a program continues to be a highly sought-after major by prospective students. Career prospects in the criminal justice field are projected to grow six to seven percent in the next eight years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Detectives and police officers comprise the largest category of growth, with an anticipated 53,400 jobs to be added to the existing 800,000. Graduates of criminal justice programs pursue careers in advocacy, crime scene investigation, cybercrime, forensic science, law enforcement, legal studies, public safety administration, victim and family advocacy, international criminal justice, and more.

Recruitment is open now for a Spring 2019 start for the fully online program, and Fall 2019 for the on-campus degree.
