On the Front Lines of COVID-19: Hayley Day

May 19, 2020

Professional freelance photographer, Hayley Day ’15, spent the early days of her career doing documentary work for not-for-profit organizations like Jericho Road and World Hope International. While her work has taken her all over the world–including Sierra Leone and Cambodia–today she is documenting and collecting stories of the COVID-19 pandemic in NYC. “In all my experience in documentary work I never expected something like this to hit home,” said Hayley. “You never think this kind of stuff can happen in your own backyard.”

While many photographers aren’t venturing out, Hayley is boldly chronicling this moment in history when New York City is empty. “People say to me, ‘oh you are crazy for going out and doing this,’ and I say—well I think you need to! The world is going to want these photos when it is all over. I mean, have you ever seen New York City empty without people? It’s really eerie! It’s amazing to think that eight million people are staying inside.”

At her core, Hayley is a visual storyteller—and she gave us permission to share a few of her stories with you.
