Student Government Association

The Houghton University SGA represents the official voice of the student body as members advocate for student concerns and interests. Run for office!

To be on the ballot you must complete both the Candidate Registration Form and submit a short (less than two minute) video describing why you’re running for office.

Elections will be held via email on Tuesday, September 1st. The deadline for submitting materials is Friday, August 28th.

Executive Cabinet

Any returning student with a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average is eligible to run for Executive Cabinet positions. Each is expected to spend 8-10 hours a week on their role and receives a stipend each semester. *President – 2.5 GPA & 10-12 hours

The Student Body President primarily leads the Executive Cabinet, serves as the official representative of the student body to the institution, and ensures student concerns are addressed.

The Student Body Vice-President primarily serves as the face of students to the Alumni Board, assists the President (filling in when appropriate), and ensures college committees and councils have student representation.

The Executive Officer of Communication primarily maintains detailed records of meetings and actions of the SGA, drafts official communications from the SGA, and ensures the student body is involved and aware of what SGA is working on.

The Executive Officer of Diversity & Inclusion primarily represents traditionally marginalized students, ensures their voices are heard, and helps connect diverse students with the life of the college.

The Executive Officer of Spiritual Life -primarily serves to understand and connect with the spiritual lives of students while ministering to them in appropriate ways.

The Executive Officer of Student Life primarily serves to ensure a vibrant student experience on campus by listening to student concerns regarding the non-academic Houghton experience.

Class Cabinets

Each class has a group of students dedicated to representing that class’ unique concerns to the SGA and has one member of the Class Cabinet as a voting member of the Executive Council. The Senior Class Cabinet works extensively with the graduation committee to plan Senior Week & graduation related events.

Each class may have up to a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Chaplain, Social Chair, or Historian. Their positions function similarly to the Executive Cabinet but focus on their particular class.
