Houghton College welcomes alumni, families, and the public to campus on Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6 for Homecoming and Family Weekend 2018.
The weekend festivities begin on Friday morning with the Legacy Chapel, which honors the accomplishments of Houghton alumni from around the world. Five alumni awards, including the Alum of the Year and Young Alum of the Year, will be presented. Later that evening, the Greatbatch School of Music ensembles take to the stage to showcase the talent and dedication of student and faculty musicians.
Saturday’s events begin with the Purple/Gold 5K, a student government sponsored event that raises money for its annual Turkey Drive that provides Thanksgiving turkeys to families across Allegany County. The public is welcome at the 9:00 a.m. dedication of the new equestrian event center at the Houghton College Equestrian Center. The dedication will celebrate the opening of a 36,400-square-foot facility housing a 100’ x 200’ indoor riding arena, stalls, educational center, and other amenities. Following the ceremony, an equestrian showcase and facility open house will be presented. Both events are open to the public.
Later that morning, all are invited to participate in the bagpipe parade to the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex where the Greatbatch School of Music Drumline will kick off the Homecoming festival. This year’s festival will provide guests with the opportunity to engage in interactive activities with academic departments, student organizations, and athletic teams. Highlights of the festival will include a family friendly comedy show by alumnus Derrick Tennant ’93, Mr. No the Balloon Guy, photo booths, “Animals of Alaska” exhibit, and more.
In addition, Houghton athletic teams will compete throughout the day on Saturday, including cross-country, field hockey, tennis, and soccer. Alumni will gather throughout the weekend for reunion celebrations.
