Art, Creativity & Faith

Develop sophistication in media handling while integrating knowledge, creativity and Christian faith into the studio.

Why Art at Houghton?

The Art department at Houghton offers study opportunities structured to develop in students an understanding of the meaning, both past and present, of art in society.

To Stop and To Look

Houghton student Emily Friesen reflects on how majoring in art at Houghton University has changed how she looks at the world.

Gain experience and confidence

Art majors and minors acquire comprehensive experience in use of materials and technique while gaining confidence in their ability to integrate faith, knowledge and creativity.

Prepare for your future

The art major complements the Christian liberal arts experience to prepare students for teaching, professional art production and graduate studies.

Experienced art faculty

All Houghton University department faculty members hold a terminal degree (MFA) in studio art, and are actively involved in production and exhibition.

Off-campus trips and gallery exhibits

The student’s experience is diversified through visiting artists, on-campus gallery exhibits and off-campus trips that give students access to cultural resources in cities throughout the northeast.

Mayterm study options

The Art department also offers Mayterm art history experiences every other spring in cities such as Paris, London, Munich, Berlin, Istanbul, Vienna, Budapest, Florence, Rome, Lisbon and Madrid.
