Solving Problems, Finding Patterns and Making Connections

Learn to think critically, reason effectively, and communicate clearly while developing mathematical skills to solve problems in the real world.

Do you like to find patterns and think deeply?

Develop your mathematical skills to solve problems in the real world.

The Houghton University Mathematics Department is a community of creative, curious people who share these interests. It’s a place where you can learn to think critically, reason effectively, and communicate clearly as you ask and answer big questions. You’ll learn mathematics by actively doing mathematics, and you’ll grow in faith as you discover ways in which mathematics and Christian faith inform and enrich each other.

Studying mathematics at Houghton prepares students for success in a wide variety of careers and graduate programs through an academically rigorous, challenging, and supportive environment. The quantitative, structural, logical, and creative thought fostered through studying mathematics serves students well in other disciplines from physics, chemistry, and computer or data science to art, literature, and psychology. The program offers many opportunities outside the classroom, including research with professors, attending regional and national conferences, participating in mathematics competitions, serving as a teaching assistant, and a weekly departmental tea time.
