This fall, Houghton College announced a drastic change in the pricing structure for traditional undergraduate students, reducing the annual published price by 53%. Today, the college is extending a significant price reduction for students in fully online undergraduate programs as well.
Beginning this January, Houghton Online’s new tuition will be $392/credit hour—down from $490/credit hour—resulting in a savings of $294 per three–credit–hour course. And that is in addition to the price reduction already made this past fall. On average, this will save students $6,500 when completing their fully online degree at Houghton.
Both new and current students will benefit from this new tuition rate, which allows Houghton to offer working professionals the college training they need at a more affordable and competitive price. “I’m delighted today to be able to announce the pricing reset for our fully online undergraduate classes,” says Houghton College President, Dr. Shirley Mullen. “This price reduction highlights Houghton’s historic mission to make a high-quality, deeply Christian education available for students who would not otherwise have it.”
“We believe that everyone should have access to an affordable education—no matter where you live or how far into your degree you are,” says Ken Schenck, Director of Houghton Online. “We want to ensure that our students can meet their career goals without having to sacrifice their financial ones.” Along with this new lower price, Houghton Online also offers individualized advising sessions to help each student navigate the world of online learning and to help plan their path to graduation. Assistant Director and Program Advisor Tammy Dunmire specializes in student success and academic services. “I view my role as being the student’s advocate and biggest cheerleader,” explains Dunmire. “I love that I get to come alongside each student and support them wherever they are in their journey and then help them get to graduation.”
While many online programs are packaged to essentially be “self-service,” Houghton Online takes a truly personal approach. “Houghton’s online programs have always been high quality, and the one-on-one attention our students get is distinctive,” continues Schenck. “Now that Houghton has made its online programs even more affordable, we are priced competitively with the best-known programs in the nation.”
Houghton College has been among the most affordable liberal arts and Christian colleges for multiple years and has been named a Best College for Your Money by Money Magazine. This new tuition rate for undergraduate online programs allows Houghton to maintain the same high–quality, Christian education at a surprisingly affordable and competitive price, an embodiment of our founding mission.
“One hundred and thirty-seven years ago, Willard J. Houghton traveled around this area on horseback connecting with young people in need of a Christian education,” continues Mullen. “Today, we have new opportunities to give learners access to a Houghton education. I believe that Willard J. Houghton would be right there with us—excited to utilize this latest technology for that larger mission of ‘fixing up the world in the name of Jesus Christ.’”
