Director of Safety and Security

I chose to work in higher education as the Director of Safety and Security at Houghton University because it represents the intersection of my professional experience, my personal values, and my commitment to service.

Over the past 18 years, I have served in law enforcement, investigations, and safety leadership roles, most recently with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. In that role, I was responsible for emergency response, investigations, compliance audits, and maintaining the overall safety and security of the facility. Those experiences strengthened my ability to lead under pressure, assess risk, and build systems that protect people. Earlier leadership roles in retail security further broadened my understanding of prevention, crisis management, and team coordination.

While I am proud of my background in corrections and security, I felt called to apply those skills in an environment centered on growth, mentorship, and community. Higher education offers a unique opportunity to not only protect people, but to positively influence a culture. A university campus is a place where young adults are discovering who they are and preparing for their future. Being part of that journeyโ€”ensuring students, faculty, and staff feel safe and supportedโ€”aligns deeply with my heart for service.

Experience

  • Corrections Officer with the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision

What drew me specifically to Houghton University is its strong Christian mission and emphasis on care, responsibility, and community. My faith is central to who I am, and serving at an institution that integrates faith with learning allows me to lead with integrity and compassion. Safety and security are most effective when built through collaboration and trust, not just enforcement. My goal is to foster a shared culture of awareness and responsibility where every member of the campus community plays a role in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.

This transition is also deeply personal. My wife, Lia, is a Houghton alumna, and our family is actively involved in the local community and church. Choosing to serve here means investing not only in the university, but in the broader community where my family lives and grows.

Ultimately, I chose to work in higher education because it allows me to combine experience with purpose. At Houghton University, I have the opportunity to strengthen campus safety while reflecting the values of service, faith, and community that define both the institution and my own life.
