Mark Yuly

Professor of Physics

Dr. Yuly’s research interests include low and medium energy nuclear physics and small accelerator design. Dr. Yuly has co-authored several physics articles on his research, and has been a visiting scientist at MIT, the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo.

Professional Experience

  • Professor of Physics, Houghton College, Houghton, NY (2000-present)
  • Associate Dean for Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Houghton College, Houghton, NY (2014-2019)
    Developed vision and led implementation of strategies to strengthen science and math academic programs, including the areas of curriculum, faculty hiring, faculty development, budget oversight, recruiting and fund raising.  Responsible for development and implementation of new engineering program.  Oversight of $4 million science building renovation.
  • Visiting Scientist, State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo, Department of Physics (2011-present)
    Development of the rapid isotope-counting system (RICS) to measure low energy light ion cross sections using inertial confinement fusion.  Measurement of  12C(n,2n) cross section for use in LLE and NIF ICF diagnostics.

    Responsible for the curriculum and the development of the physics major, as well as for teaching general education and lower- and upper-division physics courses and involving undergraduate students in variety of research experiences.

    Designed and implemented a novel science honors program for academically gifted first-year students.  Directed and taught in this year-long program that includes an interdisciplinary problem driven science course (team-taught by a biologist, chemist, and physicist, as well as a writing and a communication professor) and various ancillary courses in calculus, history, and philosophy.

    Collaborator in the 3He(n,pp)nn, d(n,nd) and d(n,np)n experiments at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE).
