Expanding Access for Christian Teachers through ACSI partnership

July 16, 2026

Partnership will enable Houghton University to offer coursework toward ACSI Teacher and Administrator Certification
Houghton University is pleased to announce its accreditation by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) to offer courses that fulfill requirements for ACSI Teacher and Administrator Certification. This agreement reflects a shared commitment to equipping Christian educators with both the professional competencies and the biblical foundation needed to flourish in K–12 Christian education.

A Partnership Rooted in Shared Mission

ACSI Certification exists to strengthen Christian schools by credentialing educators who meet established professional and biblical standards. Through this agreement, Houghton University will be recognized as an institution whose coursework aligns with ACSI’s rigorous requirements in three key areas: Bible Knowledge, Educational Studies and Christian Philosophy of Education.

The agreement will provide a clear and accessible pathway for current ACSI school teachers and current Houghton students to pursue multiple ACSI K–12 certifications — including Elementary Teacher, Secondary Teacher, Specialist Teacher and Bible Specialist.

“We believe God calls His people to excellence in every vocation, and teaching is no exception. This agreement with ACSI is a natural extension of our mission — to send graduates into the world equipped not only with knowledge, but with conviction, character, and the credentials to serve Christian schools well.”  Michele Vanasse, Ellen F. Donley Dean of Education and Behavioral Science

What This Means for Students and Educators

ACSI Certification is widely recognized across Christian schools nationally and internationally as a mark of professional credibility and spiritual integrity. Candidates may earn their first ACSI certificate with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in any field, and certification levels progress from Temporary through Standard, Professional and ultimately Lifetime status.

Under the proposed partnership, students pursuing education-related programs at Houghton University would also be able to incorporate ACSI-recognized coursework directly into their academic plan, reducing duplication of effort and creating a more seamless journey from university study to classroom ministry.
