Assistant Professor of Psychology

I chose to teach psychology because it helps me understand what it means to be human: how we learn, think, and connect with one another. Iโ€™ve taught in many different environments over the years, and Iโ€™ve found that the best part of psychology is how it helps students understand themselves and others in lasting, genuine ways. In my classes, I encourage students to apply what they learn to real life. Approaching teaching this way helps students think more deeply about why people act the way they do. I appreciate Houghtonโ€™s blend of faith, learning, and wisdom. Itโ€™s a place where students can grow not just as thinkers, but as whole persons.

Dr. Timothy Xerilandโ€™s research centers on affective and attentional computing within intelligent learning environments. His work explores disengagement-detecting interventions and their connection to a theory that integrates cognitive and emotional aspects to enhance student reengagement. He has also developed a novel emotion regulation strategy called formative reappraisal, which combines antecedent-focused and response-focused techniques.
