David Horace Davies received a DMA in composition from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami (UM), where he studied with Dennis Kam, John Van der Slice and Robert Gower. Prior to his time at UM, he studied composition and conducting with Mark Hijleh at the Greatbatch School of Music, Houghton College. Davies’ music has been performed across the United States and in Puerto Rico and in the Great Hall at Cooper Union in NYC. His most recent work, Shout the Glad Tidings, was premiered by over 200 musicians in a three-city concert tour of Buffalo, Houghton, and Rochester, NY.

As a composer, Davies has a particular interest in the manipulation of tonal expectations, which he pursues primarily through the “incorrect” use of familiar tonal collections. With a background in performance and extensive experience as a conductor, he strives to create engaging musical experiences that can be shared by the performers and audiences alike, and the Coral Gables Gazette has described his music as “expressive.” Recently, his piano suite The Wordless Book was selected for performance at the 2013 CMS International Conference in Buenos Aires. Davies was a finalist for the Morton Gould Young Composer Award, and his works have received awards from the College Music Society and the International Arts Movement. He has also received numerous commissions from colleges and churches in New York, Illinois and Florida.

Davies joined the faculty of the Greatbatch School of Music, Houghton College, in 2011 as Assistant Professor of Composition and Music Theory. Prior to Houghton he has served on the faculties of Augustana College (IL) and Miami Dade College, and as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Miami. In addition to his work as an educator, he is an active conductor and organist. In 2010 he served as Conference Host for the Region V of the Society of Composers, Inc., and for several years he has been an active member of SCI and the College Music Society. Davies has been a member of the Christian Fellowship of Art Music Composers since 2002 and has served on CFAMC’s Executive Advisory Committee since 2007. The Davies live in Houghton, NY and have four (exceptionally) beautiful children.
