Houghton Student Presents Paper at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research

May 16, 2022

Megan Brown ’23 presented her paper, “Female Victims and Agency in the Novels of Joyce Carol Oates,” at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research, which was held virtually April 4-8, 2022.  More than 3200 students, faculty, and administrators attended this virtual event.

Brown’s presentation was the culmination of a semester-long independent study in English.  This study entailed an ambitious amount of reading and delved into such matters as static and dynamic characters, societal norms as well as change, and unresolved conflicts.  After a rigorous semester of reading and discussion of challenging concepts, Brown had the opportunity to share her ideas with a large audience of scholars.

Megan represented our department and College with her characteristic poise, academic acumen, and deep understanding of how best to share one’s close readings of texts–and one’s research–with a broad audience -Laurie Dashnau, Professor of English
