A Message to Current Students

Welcome to the Counseling Center at Houghton University.  I think, if we are honest with ourselves, we’d have to admit that we all have “stuff” that can, at times, get in the way of doing life well.  The goal of the Counseling Center is to help break down this “stuff” into manageable pieces so that you can find success academically, relationally, in your career and in your relationship with God.  The Counseling Center is a free service for all students, staffed by licensed counselors ready to help you.

Feel free to browse through this site a bit more and check out some of the resources available including a free confidential screening.

If you’d like to speak to a counselor for a one-time consultation or for on-going support, please stop by our office in the Center for Student Success (1st floor of Chamberlain).

Message to Parents

Sending your child off to college can be a bit scary.  You may be thinking “will they be OK?”, “will they make it?”, “will they hold onto the things we’ve taught them?”, “will they make good choices?”.  These are important questions that we understand.  Our counselors recognize the challenges facing today’s student and are here to help and support your child.

Our professionally trained staff, all committed Christian therapists, are here to serve in any way that we can.  If you notice your son or daughter struggling with college adjustment, or perhaps from a series of difficulties present even before coming to Houghton, do not hesitate to suggest a visit to our office.

A Message to Prospective or Entering Students

OK…so you’re thinking about coming to Houghton, or you’ve decided to come to Houghton. Maybe you have struggled with depression or anxiety.  Perhaps you have an eating disorder, or are wondering if you’ll make it away from home.  Well, you need to know that the counselors at the Center are here to speak to you about most any concern you may have.

Whether you make an appointment for one visit simply to talk over a frustration, or whether you sign up for a number of sessions throughout the semester, your counselor will be a confidential source for you on campus. Each year our counselors speak to about 20% of the student body; we have conversations with one in every five students in any given year. So many students do stop by and take advantage of this resource…all free of charge.

If you are reading this, you are already on our website.  So, browse a bit and learn more about our services.  And by the way…Welcome to Houghton University!
