Houghton Music Professor’s Composition Performed by Grammy-Award Winner

June 14, 2022

In February of 2022,  Assistant Professor of Composition and Theory: Theory & Composition Area Coordinator at Houghton University, Carrie Magin, completed a two-day composer residency at Shenandoah Conservatory.

During this visit, her composition “How to See an Angel” for soprano, bassoon, and piano was premiered by Grammy award-winning soprano Fotina Naumenko, who is an assistant professor of voice at Shenandoah. In addition to her composition’s performance, she gave an hour-long lecture on her music to the composition students during their Composition Forum class. According to Carrie,  this residency was an outstanding opportunity to interact with both the student population and faculty at Shenandoah Conservatory.

Carrie noted,

Engaging with the students, faculty, and community members during my residency at Shenandoah Conservatory was an absolutely delightful experience! The premiere of “How to See an Angel” was very well-received, and I’m glad I could share some of the work we’re doing at Houghton University with such a prestigious institution.
