PHYS 251: Mechanics I

Prerequisites: PHYS 152

MATH 182. Pre/co-requisite: MATH 241 

Course Description

A development of classical mechanics beyond the introductory physics level. The course will focus on the dynamics of particles and rigid bodies in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions. Topics to be covered include central forces, collisions, and non-inertial frames of reference. Analytical and numerical methods of solution will be included.

It is my intention, as I teach this class, to clearly explain and demonstrate the methods by which motion may be analyzed in terms of kinematical quantities and forces.  In addition to the theoretical treatments we discuss in class, as a practical application you will have a special design project.  You will use computer tools in the design process to optimize your solution, and make an oral presentation to the class.  My goal for all of this is to prepare you, not just with the theoretical understanding of dynamics, but for the broad range of practical activities in which practicing engineers and scientists participate.
