The Mosaic Center strives to be the campus focal point for deep conversations, international connections, and rich learning centered around the diverse experiences of members of our community. At the heart of Houghton’s vision for the Mosaic Center is the picture that Scripture provides of God’s Kingdom where all tribes and tongues confess and exalt the glory of God (Rev 7:9).
Created in the spring of 2018, the Mosaic Center’s purpose is to be a centrally located, dynamic space that provides community building activities and learning opportunities that engage topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Center seeks to equip our community to be engaged listeners, advocates, bridge-builders, and servant-leaders.
Änna Pettway, PhD
Advisor for Inclusive Excellence and Assistant Professor of Psychology
Dr. Pettway holds a B.A. in psychology from Spring Arbor University, and M.A. and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit Mercy.
Dr. Pettway’s training as a clinical psychologist has made her particularly sensitive to the ways in which systemic issues impact the social, emotional, and academic experiences of college students.
As a professor, Dr. Pettway has been involved with many committees focused on improving the climate for underrepresented students. Since joining the faculty at Houghton in 2017, she has given workshops entitled, “Through Whose Eyes? What Eye Color Can Teach Us About Racial Segregation” and “Where Do We Go From Here? Practical Tips for White People Who Seek Racial Justice.” She also developed a new course, Psychology of Race and Racism, which explores the ways in which prejudice, racism, power, and privilege have led to human suffering.
The Advisor for Inclusive Excellence:
- Provides formal and informal mentoring to traditionally underrepresented students.
- Raises awareness, providing leadership, and staying current on best practices in higher education inclusion.
- Creates and maintains an environment that is welcoming, accessible, and inclusive to students of diverse backgrounds.
- Reviews and recommends policies and processes that are equitable.
- Assists student organizations focused on promoting diversity and social justice.
- Advises the president’s cabinet on matters related to diversity and inclusion.
Student Advisor for Inclusive Excellence and Mosaic Center Ambassador Interns
The Mosaic Center invests in the development of student leaders to encourage the development of an equitable and inclusive campus climate through healthy peer accountability and influence. Houghton College strongly emphasizes the belief that our students will continue to be scholar-servants beyond their time at Houghton College, and the Mosaic Center seeks to equip and empower these leaders to continue to be a part of transformative community relationships. While on campus, Mosaic Center Ambassador Interns work with the Director of the Mosaic Center to plan and implement community building events and learning opportunities centering around themes of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Student Advisor for Inclusive Excellence also serves as a team member and sits on committees to be a bridge for student voices to faculty and staff.

Every Monday at 7 PM, join us as we engage in topics of diversity and inclusion with faculty from various departments, student clubs and organizations, staff, and community members.
Black Heritage Club
Black Heritage Club enriches the campus through providing events to celebrate the diversity of culture represented on campus. While it primarily serves black students on campus, it is open to anyone.
International Students Association
The International Student Association serves to connect students from all over the world. It works to build meaningful relationships and community between students from all of the different cultures represented at Houghton.
Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources & Related Sciences
Minorities in Agriculture, National Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) promotes initiatives which foster inclusion and advancement of members of ethnic/cultural groups that are underrepresented in agricultural and natural resource sciences. The group also provides career and professional development in these fields.
